Macadamia is a genus of four species of trees indigenous to Australia, and constituting part of the plant family Proteaceae. They are native to north eastern New South Wales and central and south eastern Queensland.
A sugar plantation manager named William H. Purvis introduced the macadamia to Hawaii in the late 1800's. Three species of the genus are commercially important for their fruit, the macadamia nut /ˌmækəˈdeɪmiə/, or simply macadamia.
Common names include Queensland nut, bush nut, maroochi nut, bauple nut, and Hawaii nut.
Macadamia integrifolia is the variety commonly grown commercially in Hawaii for its delicious and tasty nut.
Mac nut wood has a lacey, eyelet patterning and can display pink and red to brown toned hues. It is typically used in smaller woodworking projects as decorative highlights in fine furniture or boxes and wood turning details.
